Find The Right MC4 Wire Online at Low Prices
MC4 connectors are generally used for connecting PV panels. They are single-contact electrical connectors that allow strings of panels that can be constructed by pushing the connectors from adjacent panels by hand. However, they need a tool to disconnect them to just to make sure they do not accidentally disconnect when wires are pulled. There are several types of MC4 and compatible products available in the solar market today. MC4 wire is a universal product that equips almost all solar panels produced since about 2011. Genuinely rated for 600 V, newer versions are rated at 1500 V.
History
While small solar panels can be used for battery charging and similar tasks may not need special connectors, larger systems connect the solar panels together in series to create strings. Previously, this was accomplished by opening a small electrical box on the backside of the panel as well as joining user-supplied wires to screw terminals within. But, bare terminals are limited to 50 V or less by the National Electrical Code (NEC). More than 50V was only available for a licensed electrician that can make the connections. In addition, these types of connections were subject to issues caused by water leakage, electrical corrosion, and mechanical stress on the wires.
In 2000, there are a number of companies that introduced products to identify these issues. In these systems, the junction box was sealed as well as two wires were attached with strain reliefs. These wires ended with push-fit connectors that met the definition of a convenience receptacle. It means they could be connected together by anyone. These two connectors become quite common during the period – the Radox connector as well as MC3 connector.
In 2008, the US Electrical Code was updated to meet the need of solar panel connectors to provide positive locking, so they were able to plug together by hand. Still, they only separated again with the help of a tool. Radox is a European manufacturer that did not respond to this specification and has since disappeared from the market. Tyco Electronics is two US-based companies that were responded by introducing new connectors to meet the need and requirement.
