Soccer team international friendlies are non-competitive exhibition games between national teams designed to prepare for official tournaments, assess new tactics, and introduce new players without impacting league standings. Guidelines and Laws
Historically, senior “A” international friendlies allowed up to six substitutions, in contrast to the 3–5 permitted in competitive matches. This rule has often been relaxed to permit greater flexibility, up to six or more players, in order to test squad depth.
An “A” grade international friendly match can be officially recognized if both teams register the match with FIFA and typically field their respective top national teams.
These matches are scheduled to take place within designated FIFA international windows, enabling players to be freed from their clubs.
Although these are friendlies, the standard Laws of the Game (FIFA Laws) still apply. Receiving a red card in a friendly match can lead to suspensions for upcoming competitive games.
Results and Rankings: The outcomes of matches are recorded and impact the FIFA World Ranking, with less emphasis placed on them than on competitive, high-stakes matches.
