What are the industrial applications of PLC?

A PLC is one of the most popular electronic devices used across industries to monitor and control building systems and production procedures effectively. It continuously monitors and receives information from input devices or sensors, processes the information, and triggers the connected output devices, to complete the task in the industrial process or machinery.

PLCs are designed to be strong, often capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, humidity, vibration, and electrical noise.

These devices are used in various industries like petrochemical , cementmanufacturing, oil and gas sector etc. It is also used for controlling traffic signals and elevators, control production processes and building systems.

The most important components of PLC are it’s CPU, I/O modules, and it’s rack and power supply. The CPU is the brain of the PLC which handles the mathematical heavy lifting required to run an automated system at an extreme speed. While The I/O modules connect the field inputs (the sensory feedback to the machine) and the outputs (the devices to produce mechanical motion and other actions) to the rack.

Types of PLC:-
A compact PLC - It is a PLC where the number of inputs and outputs are fixed. Usually, this is controlled by the manufacturer.

A modular PLC - It is a system comprising of multiple inputs and outputs. Manifold modular units can be built together on a rack to suit the purpose of the user.

The rack mounting PLC - It is similar to the modular concept, but is implemented differently. Each module in a modular PLC connects to the base unit directly, while a rack mounting PLC keeps each module separate.

Role of a Programmable Logic Controller in industrial automation:-
PLCs are used in industrial automation to increase reliability, system stability and performance, thereby, minimize the need for human operators and the chances of human error.

PLCs can work as separate units that can continuously monitor and automate a process, and can also be networked to control an entire production line. Further, it can be adapted to monitor and control many sensors and actuators.

Benefits of using PLC in Automation
PLCs have helped in improving the productivity of automation by reducing the amount of power consumed by working machines, controlling systems via proper keeping of records and minimizing required manpower via the supply of manpower.

If a business uses trailing cables for operating the automated storage and recovery systems, it would result in time wastage and higher costs. However, applying PLCs in automating these systems lowers maintenance costs.

The PLCs also help share data rapidly within and between companies. This instant data sharing has helped reduce downtime as PLCs are capable of automating the FTP and web servers, international databases and even email sending.

Future of industrial automation
Every technology is involved with automation techniques. Thus, the future scope of industrial automation would be promising enough. In most industries, a set of technologies would be applied to get the desired performance or output. Thereby, making the automation systems essential for industries.

Conclusion:-
If you require to avail PLC’S, you may opt for WAGO’s user-friendly controllers (PLCs) that are cost-effective automation solutions.
